Try it live Description
The Grand View Garden was a gift to begin with. In Dream of the Red Chamber it is built for Imperial Consort Yuanchun's visit home; afterward she bestows it on Baoyu and his sisters and cousins as their home, and even her verse naming it, "this fair garden shall be granted the name Grand View", speaks of a gift. For more than two hundred years, countless readers have imagined it from the text, yet no one has ever truly walked in. The author wanted to give this gift once more, to every reader today.
Our Grand View Garden is a 3D version of the garden that you can wander freely. Following the novel's descriptions of the space and the route Jia Zheng, Baoyu and their party take in Chapter 17, as Baoyu is tested on composing inscriptions for the garden, the author rebuilt its main courtyards:
- The main gate and the green rockery screen inscribed "A Winding Path to Seclusion"
- The villa built for the Consort's visit, with Gu'en Siyi Hall
- Yihong Court: the moon gate, crabapple and banana trees, and the plaque "Joyous Red, Delightful Green"
- Xiaoxiang Lodge: hundreds of bamboo stalks, the study and the bedroom
- Hengwu Court: walls covered in vines and the airy hall
- Daoxiang Village: apricot blossoms, vegetable plots and a thatched cottage
- Longcui Nunnery: the Buddha hall, the incense burner and the meditation hall
- A bird's-eye view of the whole garden from above Ouxiang Pavilion
You walk the garden in first person. Near a door or window, press E to go inside and see the plaques, couplets, bookshelves and furnishings up close. Wherever you go, the interface shows the name of the courtyard and the room, as if a guide were walking beside you. It plays in the browser.
The author hopes it is more than a pretty scene: a new way of reading. When the novel describes the rustling bamboo of Xiaoxiang Lodge, you can walk into the grove; when it names the plaque at Yihong Court, you can stand right beneath it. For readers who know the book, it is a return visit; for those who haven't read it yet, it may be the first door into Dream of the Red Chamber.
How Tripo was used
Tripo is the garden's prop factory: more than 70 visible detail objects come from Tripo. They give each courtyard the sense that someone really lived there, turning architectural models into scenes from the story.
- Batch generation: instead of generating props one by one on the website, the author keeps every prop's English description and face-count limit in a list (62 entries so far). A script submits them through the Tripo API and downloads the results together, skipping anything already generated. If a prop isn't right, change one line and rerun; Tripo generation now lives in the same repository as the code.
- Characters took a different route: they were generated from front, side and back views.
- The pipeline: Claude helped break down, against the novel's text, what furnishings each courtyard should have, and these became the descriptions; Tripo generated the models; a script compressed them with meshopt and adjusted material metalness; props are placed at real-world scale in the browser, with Blender handling the buildings, bamboo and rocks and Tripo covering the details Blender couldn't; three.js does the final lighting, shadows and reflections.
- Examples: the parrot stand, tea stove, bookshelves, qin table and flower grave at Xiaoxiang Lodge; the Guanyin statue and wooden fish at Longcui Nunnery; the throne, crane candlesticks, jade archway and stone lions at the Grand View Tower.
