What if you could send someone a future they could explore? Future City (full title: Future City — Build a city. Leave a letter.) is a short browser-based 3D city-building game for someone you love and the future they will inherit: your choices become a personal letter from 2058. Dedicate an island to them, then choose what they love: books, music, sport, the stars or the sea. A matching landmark becomes the heart of their world.
From 2050 to 2058, restore six districts with forests, solar energy, homes and wetlands. Balance limited funds, nature, energy, wellbeing and resilience while preparing for a coastal storm and a heatwave. Placement and timing decide whether the island thrives.
The reward is more than a score. A cinematic replay revisits your choices, night lights illuminate the city, and a letter describes the life you helped make possible, including a personal line about the chosen landmark. "Send this city" turns the finished world into a gift link: the recipient opens their island, takes a tour, reads the letter and can build a city back for the sender, with no account required. Players can also save a postcard.
Future City was started from scratch during the hackathon, and apart from the five landmarks, everything in the world is procedural. It is provided as source code and needs to be built locally; it uses JavaScript, Three.js and WebGL, and was developed with assistance from OpenAI Codex.
How Tripo was used
The five landmarks at the heart of the gift were all generated with Tripo text-to-3D, model H2.5.
- Five personalized landmarks: a library tower, a bandstand, a stadium, an observatory and a lighthouse garden. The recipient's interests decide which one becomes the city's centerpiece, and a line in their letter from 2058.
- Built for the browser: the GLB exports were optimized with 1024px JPEG textures while preserving geometry, then integrated into the Three.js scene with automatic sizing, grounding, night lighting and gift-link replay.
