Description

HUINAN: When the South Wind Returns is a story about growing up and learning to say goodbye to the people we love. It unfolds between two connected worlds: the fading reality of an old home in Lingnan, in southern China, and a magical realm shaped by memory. The author made it as a gift for the people we love and miss.

In this world, memories do not vanish. They settle into familiar places, everyday objects and living things: a ticking clock, an old photograph, a calendar, a cassette recorder, or a windmill jasmine once tended by someone we loved. When those memories begin to fade, the spaces that hold them turn fragmented, silent and overgrown.

Yuyu enters this inner world to recover the scattered traces of her grandfather. As she explores forests of flowers, humid courtyards and rooms suspended in time, each object she restores brings back a small piece of the life they shared. The windmill jasmine is the emotional thread between the two worlds: fragile yet persistent, it carries affection across time, loss and remembrance.

At heart, it is a story about grief seen through a child's eyes. It imagines memory not as a place where the past is trapped, but as a living world that can be revisited, understood and gently carried forward. The film was finished before the hackathon; during the event, the author polished it again with PixVerse and TapNow.
