Description
Where We Were is a tiny 3D planet built from the places you've shared with someone, made as a gift for them. This one is for Ángela. Every trip she and the author took together became a spot on the globe: Porto, their first trip on their own; the caravels in Huelva, where the author's grandpa fought every ship's ladder; a pizza in Nerja; a night in Granada lost among the stairs; the parties of Bilbao; the shells of Cudillero; the viewpoint in Lastres. Each memory is marked by a small object generated with Tripo, the thing that brings that day back, standing exactly where it happened.
When she opens her planet, a guided tour flies from memory to memory in the order they lived them. Each stop opens a small album with the date, a few words and the photo. Then she can step inside: World Labs turns that single photo into a 3D place where she can stand and look around, with the memory's object floating beside her. It is sharp where the camera looked and blurry at the edges, just like a real memory.
The tour ends by pulling back until the whole planet is in view. It is almost empty, with one light glowing over the next place they want to go; then dozens more slowly light up all over the world, along with a single line: "…and everywhere we haven't been yet."
Where We Were is also a tool. Anyone can drop memories on the globe with a photo and a sentence, then send the finished planet as a link to the person who was there. The project was started from scratch during the event: the idea, the code, the 3D objects, the worlds and all the content were created between September 22 and October 5, 2026.
The author sees two directions for what comes next. Shared planets: everyone keeps their own world of memories, and a memory lived together appears on both people's planets, each with a public and a private version, like a small social network of places. And Where We Were as a gift: choose who it's for, add your memories, and receive a finished planet for an anniversary, a birthday or a goodbye, delivered as a link or as a small 3D-printed globe with a QR code that opens the world, made to sit on a shelf.
How Tripo was used
Tripo gives every memory its symbol.
- The creator writes one sentence about the thing that brings that day back (two custard tarts, a caravel, a pizza), and Tripo's text-to-3D API turns it into a detailed PBR object, generated automatically inside the app rather than modeled by hand.
- Each object is optimized for the web and planted on the globe at the exact coordinates, then reappears floating inside that memory's World Labs world, tying the planet and the place together.
